Okay – I hear your point. But let me offer another perspective. Back when I was COO of my last company I hired MANY consultants. They were experts in their fields just like the SEO experts you talk about here. Each of them claimed that they could help improve my business significantly if I let them show us what to do and help us implement it. This is all very parallel to your discussion of SEO consulting / projects.

But VERY few of them would put their fees at risk based on our actual business performance. Why? A few reasons. 1) They need to eat too. In other words, they couldn’t afford to take the risks. 2) There were other factors involved that could have sunk the entire project through no fault of their own.

I think these two issues exist for SEO’s as well. I personally don’t agree that everything has to be guaranteed. In fact, very few things you buy (services) are guaranteed in business. Even when they are (such as guaranteed bandwidth) they have caveats all over the place. Why such high standards for SEO? It takes time to do SEO and people should be compensated for their time plain and simple. Perhaps a bonus for good results, but not nothing.
