Yahoo ditches Microsoft, hitches up with Google

admin » 14 June 2008 » In Google, Microsoft, Yahoo » No Comments

Yahoo’s efforts to revive takeover talks with Microsoft have reached a dead end, prompting the internet pioneer to hire online search leader Google to handle some of its advertising sales.

The news disclosed on Thursday caused Yahoo shares to plunge 10 per cent as investors abandoned hope that Microsoft would renew a nearly five-month quest to buy the Sunnyvale, California-based company.

While a stock sell-off is never welcome news for any company, Wall Street’s disenchantment comes at a particularly bad time for Yahoo and its board of directors.

Yahoo is trying to fend off a shareholder mutiny led by activist investor Carl Icahn, who has vowed to replace the company’s board because of the way the directors handled the Microsoft negotiations.

But Icahn has been hoping to engineer a sale to Microsoft, so some shareholders may be reluctant to support his attempted coup unless he can demonstrate his slate of directors has a better turnaround plan than the current board.

Icahn did not return phone calls seeking comment on Thursday.

This won’t hurt a bit: Google Health launches

Google has launched Google Health, a long-anticipated medical records service letting US users store and manage their health care information online.

The offering draws yet another battle line between Internet search king Google and global software giant Microsoft, which began offering a similar HealthVault service in October.

"It isn’t surprising both sides are going after it," Silicon Valley analyst Rob Enderle told AFP, who said the service was likely to strongly appeal to baby boomers – the generation of Americans born between the late 1940s and early 1960s.

"Health care is not just lucrative; you are solving a problem critical to an aging group of boomers. There are public relations and business benefits to it."

Rob Shilkin, a spokesman for Google Australia, said that while there was a strong recognition in Australia of the significant benefits to patients of this type of service, the was "no current timetable" on a rollout of the service for local users.

Google hits top spot for first time

admin » 16 May 2008 » In Google, Internet Marketing, Search Engines » No Comments

Google has surpassed Yahoo to become the most popular website in the United States, according to comScore’s rankings by the number of unique monthly visitors.

Google has long been the internet’s leader in search, but its audience has trailed Yahoo’s when counting other services such as email and photo sharing.

April’s numbers, which internet tracking firm comScore plans to formally release on Thursday, show Google on top for the first time.

The lead is tiny – 466,000 visitors out of about 141 million apiece. And while such measures are good as a gauge, they aren’t known for precision. In fact, rival rankings from Nielsen Online already had Google as the top web brand.

Still, comScore’s finding is one more hint of Google’s dominance over internet pioneer Yahoo.

Cloud Computing

This looks interesting – Cloud Computing

Forget monster hard drives, backing up your PC and shrink-wrapped software – the future of computing is up in the “cloud” as all of the big technology players jostle to take the “P” out of PC.

Microsoft this week brought the cloud computing concept – whereby all of our data and applications are stored on the internet as opposed to on the PC – a step closer to reality with the unveiling of its Live Mesh platform.

Live Mesh is essentially a web-based operating system, letting users connect all of their devices (home PC, laptop, work computer and, in the not too distant future, handhelds and games consoles) into their own personal mesh. Files and applications can be placed into a “Mesh folder”, which lives on the internet and can be accessed by all devices.
