SEO – The Importance of Fresh Content

admin » 20 October 2009 » In Internet Marketing »

They say that for SEO, “content is king”. And although I agree with this statement 100%, I would like to expand on it a little more and specify exactly what kind of content you should be adding.

Unique content is what the search engines love, especially Google. The reasoning is simple: what is so special about having the exact same content as every other web site? Nothing! That’s why it is critical to update your web site with content that is totally unique. If you have fresh, unique content on your web site, then it will be A LOT easier to rank for the keywords and search terms you are gunning for. Trust me on this one!

If you are using the same content as other web sites (either by copying or publishing someone else’s articles, videos, or information) then you are actually going to do more harm than good when it comes to your web site’s placement in the search engine results pages.

It should be noted at this point that I cannot think of one single blog that doesn’t have at least a few articles that have been published elsewhere. I’m not saying this is a totally bad idea for your web site’s SEO. But I am saying that it would be extremely harmful if every single article on your web site was copied from a previously published location.

Also, it is critical that you update your web site on a regular basis. If you want to rank well in Google, you must have fresh content being added to your web site.

Now, there is a lot of debate over how often you should update the content of your site. Personally, I think what matters the most is that you do it on a regular basis. If you choose to update once a week, then stick with that regimen and update faithfully according to your schedule. The same rules apply here is you choose to update every day or every other day.

A lot of web sites, especially here in the Branson area, are what we webmasters call “static”, meaning, they are simple web-brochure sites. The pages of the web site have been created to advertise a single product or service. And they don’t get updated very often, as there is nothing to update (how often does a local Branson business change their phone number or hours of operation?).

So, the best way to enable a static web site to be able to update with fresh content is to install a blog. Either on a sub-domain or in a sub-directory of the existing web site, a blog is an awesome way to add on dynamic capabilities (by “dynamic” I mean just the opposite of static. Dynamic content can change and be added easily without the need to re-design the web site).

It’s a proven fact: Google loves blogs. Blogging is probably the best way to keep your web site packed full of fresh, unique content. And most blogging tools, such as Word Press (the CMS I use for this blog) are very easy to use and operate. It’s as simple as logging in to the admin panel, selecting a title for each new post, and typing in the words you want to say, much like using Microsoft Word.

Another important thing to remember about adding fresh, unique content to improve your search engine rankings is that you should be adding content that your site’s viewers will find useful. After all, the goal of any online marketing campaign is to keep your viewers coming back to visit your web site, over and over again, right? So, you really need to publish articles, videos, and other information that will keep the viewers coming back.

So, what to write about? Well, I would recommend that you write content that is relative to the main focus of your web site. For instance, i wouldn’t write an article on buying miniature horses on this blog because the main focus here is computers, web development, SEO, and technology in general. For obvious reasons, stick to the script and make sure your content is relates to the main theme of your web site as a whole.
