5 Common SEO Mistakes

It is every webmaster’s dream to be on the first page of search engine results for a particular keyword. With tones of information and e-books out there preaching on SEO tips and tricks, it is very easy to get overzealous and carried away by the SEO process. Here are some common mistakes to avoid when optimizing your website.

‘Cold’ Keywords. The process of selecting a keyword to optimize for should be carried out in great care. If you wish to optimize your website for one set of keywords, make sure that the keyword has at least 5000 searches a month for your efforts to be worth it. If you wish to optimize for ‘cold’ keywords (those with less that 100 searches a day), it is best to optimize for a group of such keywords in order to receive a tangible amount of traffic.

Continuity in Efforts. SEO is not just a touch and go process where you just optimize a website and wait for it to take off. You need to continuously update your website with fresh content and constantly build backlinks to improve your rankings.

Using Too Many Images. Search engine rank your site based on the texts on your page not the images. Search engine robots cannot read images, so any content in the form of image files would not affect your rankings. If you have to use images in your website, try to include the keywords in the name of the images.

Spelling and Grammar Mistakes. Make sure that the content of your page is well written. Many search engines now have grammar and spelling checks in their algorithms.

Redirects. If you have moved your site to a new page, make sure that you use a 301 redirect page. The uses of any other forms of redirects are not advisable as they are frowned upon by major search engines.
