Is the Love Affair With Google Over?
Lately more and more forums I visit, I see posts from disgruntled webmasters and SEO DIY’ers complaining about how Google indexes their websites. Tales of “telling their friends and clients to use Yahoo instead” in a bid to get their websites found more easily. Is the world falling out of love with the might of Google? and why?
The further you read into the thread you realise and begin to question ” how much do these people really know and understand Google?” Conflicting arguments and “why do they have to do a sitemap.xml” file for their site when it’s obvious what there client is trying to sell seem to be common moans and groans. To this I say use Google, use it’s tools it is all there for you to find! Google very helpfully has webmaster pages, and even a basic guide on how to SEO your website for indexing. So why is it still such a big deal?
Before SEO Consultants and internet marketing gurus, how did webmasters get their clients to the top of the Google rankings? Around 50% probably have no idea, about 40% may have a fair idea and the remaining 10% know absolutely and are keeping the secret to themselves. And so the SEO Consultant was born.
Commanding BIG fees and even BIGGER SEO Plans to boot, SEO Consultants are seen as the Gods of the internet with never ending promises of getting your business on the first page of Google. Though do a search for SEO Consultants (on Google obviously) and read the pages you are presented with. Endless pages of conflicting information, has SEO become so complicated that only the super heavyweights of the internet can actually implement it or is there are underlying reason? Is it maybe a lot easier than we are being led to believe?
As a relative “newbie” to the field I thought that I would seek out “the one”, “the golden child” of SEO, someone who could tell me and teach me the ways of the SEO world with all of its mystic and magic.
Guess what? No one could tell me. It seems over the years, a relatively simple concept, has become an all consuming machine. Individuals clamber daily to be No1 and implement the next craze in SEO or scrabble together the pennies to buy the newest version of SEO software with claims of getting your site in the Top Ten of Google. More conflicting information.
So, you ask, where and how can it really be done? Google. Google will tell you how, its all there in black and white. It has all of the tools and information you could possibly need, you can see what it is doing with your website and why it is doing it, you don’t need to look too hard either.
If you have a logical mind and can clear you head of all that you have read previously, and of course can read simple statistics, Google practically lays it on a plate for you to optimise to your hearts content.
But Google takes so long to index a site doesn’t that worry me? No. Why would it? I followed the information and did my bit it just takes Google a bit of time to catch up. I like to think of Google as a disobedient child, frustrating as it may be, the more you tell it something eventually it will listen and your months of hard work nuturing and caring will be rewarded.
Is the love affair with Google over? Not for me – in fact it is just beginning.
