SEO Is Only The First Step To Marketing
Granted affiliate marketing is a great way to earn a living. But the fact is most people become quickly discouraged and drop out too soon. The failure to be successful, with affiliate marketing, is the result of making a few simple but common mistakes. Here are some examples of those common mistakes and why they should be avoided.
The most common misconception, about affiliate marketing, is you can rake in huge amounts of revenue simply by slapping up a low-quality website with no original content whatsoever. Then toss in some affiliate links or AdSense ads and you’ll be rich!
It is most certainly true you need to have a working web site up in order to participate in an affiliate program, you also must apply some effort to getting the word out about your site. Getting that word out is called marketing. Without some marketing effort the chances of people visiting your web site (called traffic) and clicking on one of the links are nil to none.
Promoting your web site is a major part of creating an affiliate income. This will mean doing everything you can to raise your search engine ranking positions on Google, Yahoo, and MSN and getting the word out about your site. Far too many people assume that somehow the Internet will magically capture every word on their web site and have it show up prominently when people do a search. On the Internet if you build it they still want come to it – without a lot of marketing.
Taking the time to carefully research keywords, craft content related to these keywords and then optimize each of your pages for them is an absolute must. And that’s not it. Marketing is much bigger than just SEO.
A strong and comprehensive marketing effort includes getting out there and using every legitimate means of promoting your site. It includes listing your site at online businesses and informational sites but most importantly would be properly using the Social Marketing sites. Often called Web 2.0!
Choosing to consider this sort of activity a waste of time is more or less deciding you want your business to fail. Trust me as I am guilty of that very fact. I ignored Web 2.0 marketing techniques for months and watched my traffic and my revenues slowly decline to less than 10% of what they were just a year ago.
Another mistake many affiliate partners make is not choosing products that have some relevance to the content of their web site/blog. For example, you run a wonderful web site about the care and training of dogs. People will visit your site to see the images of your pets, read your comments on various aspects of dog training, and perhaps to post a message or two.
Since your visitors will already have an expressed interest in pets, you need to ensure the products you promote relate to some aspect of the pet care niche. You have the potential to generate more sales if this is the case, rather than promoting unrelated products, such as home decorating or gps navigation systems.
One final mistake that many affiliate marketers make is not providing unique content. Keeping the content fresh is one way of building and keeping a loyal reading audience.
If there is a reason to check back with your site every week, then chances are repeat visitors will return on a regular basis. This increases the chances of your visitors purchasing a product or service you are promoting.
Keeping the same old look and the same old text with nothing new to entice people back is a sure way to limit your chances at being a successful affiliate marketer. In short, most of the more common mistakes all track back to an attitude that you do not have to do anything in order to generate revenue.
The fact is that you must proactively promote your site, keep the content fresh, and make sure your products have a strong connection to the subject matter of your site. If you take the time and effort to do these three simple things, you will have much better chances at being a success with affiliate marketing.
